Winner Stripped after Doping Scandal
Since the financial struggles of 1979, the respect for the Vuelta a Espana had been decreasing throughout the European racing community. Recent years have seen numerous rider protests, team resignations, and emotional Spanish team infighting during the Vuelta. The problems of previous editions would all pale by comparison to the “Doping Scandal in 1982”.

Race Summary:
Prologue: a 6.7 km Individual Time Trial in Santiago de Compostelle, Frenchman Marc Gomez, winner of the 1982 Milan-San Remo, took a surprising stage win and put on the first Amarillo Jersey of 1982.
Stage 4: Serious racing began on the fourth stage from Santander to Reinosa. A very rapid pace leading into the climb of category 1 Collar Escudo put Gomez in difficulty. Five riders broke away, Marino Lejarreta, Alberto Fernandez, Belgian Claude Criquielion, Antonio Coll, and Angel Arroyo. Race leader Gomez lost 7’35” to the new race leader Criquielion.
Stage 5: 230 km from Reinosa to Logrono, Angel Camarillo attacked the peloton, dropped everyone, and rode 217 km in a solo breakaway to gain a brilliant stage win!!!
Stage 6: For the first time in the history of the Vuelta, T.V.E. broadcast the stage finish in Zaragoza live. Spanish climber, Jose-Luis Laguia, surprise everyone by winning the sprint for the stage win.
DOPING NOTE: The first doping incident of 1982 came on stage 9, when Frenchman Hugues Grondin won a brilliant sprint for his first professional stage win. However, after a positive test at doping control Grondin was stripped of the stage win.
Stage 15a: Team Reynolds’ Angel Arroyo and his teammates rode brilliantly in control of the General Classification. Arroyo put the race lead out of reach with a stage win on the Stage 15b Individual Time Trial in Campo de Criptana. The winner of this Vuelta was clearly decided after the time trial stage.

Stage 17: 178 km from San Fernando Henares to the summit of the Puerto de Navacerrada, three riders, Munoz, Belda, and race leader Arroyo broke away and crossed the finish line in the lead. All three riders will be relegated after a doping positive. Marino Lejarreta was awarded the stage win. Early race leader Criquielion lost an additional 1’47” and abandoned the race.
Stage 19: Angel Arroyo rode into Madrid for the apparent Vuelta victory. 48 hours after the race finished, the doping scandal emerged. The announcement that Angel Arroyo with teammate Vicente Belda, Team ZOR's Pedro Munoz, and Team TEKA's Alberto Fernandez (second in the GC through sixteen stages) were all disqualified for a positive on the 'Control Dopage' (Doping Control) tests taken after stage 17.
Subsequently, Marino Lejarreta became the 1982 Vuelta a Espana victor.
